Hyperarousal and stress are common contributors to the development of poor sleep and insomnia, impairments in the stress regulation system can interfere with initiating or maintaining sleep. Vice versa, poor sleep also deregulates the stress system. In this symposium we integrate new data that investigates the sleep-stress link.

1. Sleep and HPA-axis stress response over time in middle-aged and older persons - Annemarie Luik
Sleep may alter the function of the negative feedback loop of the HPA-axis, data from our population-based sample suggests that these effects of sleep may affect the functioning of the stress system over multiple years.

2. Pathways from prenatal and postnatal stress to sleep across childhood: the role of cortisol - Desi Kocevska
In a population-based birth cohort of children followed up to 16 years we investigated the role early life stress (prenatal and postnatal) has on sleep patterns across childhood. We ascertain cortisol secretion patterns as a mediator of this association.

3. Sleeping on it: ditching or deepening distress? – Eus van Someren
Synaptic plasticity during sleep supports consolidation and adaptation: not only for 'cold' facts and skills, but also for their emotional, rewarding or distressing value. But what makes distress disappear overnight in some, yet worsen in others, resulting in mental health issues?

4. Insomnia and stress: moving beyond diathesis stress – Philip Cheng
There is ample evidence indicating that insomnia and stress are bidirectionally associated; however, emerging evidence also suggests that treatment of insomnia (i.e. restoring sleep health) may also play a protective factor
